Position Strategy in Poker

9 min read

Position is the most undervalued edge in poker. Acting last gives you information everyone else pays for.

Why Position Matters

You see what opponents do before you act. You control pot size more easily. You can bluff more effectively. You can value bet thinner. Every decision is more informed.

Position Names

Early Position (UTG, UTG+1): Tightest range. Middle Position: Slightly wider. Cutoff: Much wider. Button: Widest—the best seat. Blinds: Positional disadvantage post-flop.

Practical Adjustment

Play 15% of hands from early position. Play 25% from middle. Play 40% from the cutoff. Play 50%+ from the button. These numbers adjust based on opponent tendencies and table dynamics.
