Pot Odds Explained

8 min read

Pot odds tell you whether a call is mathematically profitable. It's not about feeling—it's about math.

The Calculation

Pot odds = Call amount Ă· (Pot + Call amount)

If pot is $100 and you must call $20, pot odds are 20 Ă· 120 = 16.7%

Comparing to Equity

If your chance of winning exceeds pot odds, calling is profitable. With a flush draw (roughly 35% equity), calling 16.7% pot odds is very profitable.

Implied Odds

Pot odds don't account for future betting. If you'll win more when you hit, you can call with worse immediate odds. But be realistic—don't assume maximum extraction every time.
